Patrick Vernon OBE supported by The Ubele Initiative have launched THE MAJONZI COVID-19 BEREAVEMENT FUND
People from Black, Asian and Minoritised Ethnic (B.A.M.E) backgrounds have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 pandemic with many losing their lives.
This is why Patrick Vernon OBE launched the Majonzi Covid-19 Bereavement Fund in collaboration with The Ubele Initiative and BAMEstream, to support members of the B.A.M.E community who have lost loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Majonzi Fund, named for the Swahili word for grief or sorrow will:
- provide small grants to help families, colleagues, community and faith groups to organise memorial events and tributes to celebrate and commemorate the lives of loved ones who lost their lives during the pandemic;
- raise money so individuals can access culturally relevant bereavement and grief support in over 20 languages which reflects the religious, ethnic and cultural diversity of the community.
“COVID-19 is having a significant impact on households in Britain especially those from BAME communities. When you lose a family member like I have you realise the importance of their contribution to society and its impact on families and work colleagues as part of the grieving process. This Fund with the support of the public can make a small difference to families and communities affected by COVID-19.”Dr Patrick Vernon OBE
